The Self‑Authored Life™ Framework
From the identity that made you successful, through the trap it can become, to the life and leadership you consciously author next.
01
The Successful Persona
Every successful leader develops a Successful Persona: the expert, the fixer, the high performer, the reliable one, the perfectionist, the peacemaker. These aren’t fake — they’re built from real strengths, and they’re the reason you got noticed, trusted and promoted.
02
The Success Trap
The Success Trap is what happens when the context changes and the persona doesn’t. The behaviour that created success at one level quietly starts limiting success at the next one — and because the behaviour is protecting something, simply being told to “change the habit” rarely sticks.
03
Self‑Authored Leadership
Self‑Authored Leadership is the deliberate alternative: naming the persona, seeing where it’s now a constraint, and consciously deciding what to keep, what to evolve, and who to become next.
Two Roads Into the Success Trap
The Success Trap doesn’t only show up one way. In my experience, there are two distinct roads into it — both real, neither more legitimate than the other, and most people find themselves further down one than the other.
Road One
The Context Shift
This one has a visible trigger. The persona was genuinely earned, and it genuinely worked — until the role, team or organisation changed. A promotion. A bigger remit. A transformation. The same behaviour that created success at one level quietly becomes the ceiling on the next one. Because there’s a clear before-and-after, this is the road most organisations recognise immediately.
Road Two
The Inherited Script
This one has no event to point to. Nothing broke. Nothing stopped fitting. The persona may never have been consciously chosen in the first place — it can still be working, still earning promotions and recognition, and still not feel like it’s actually yours. It’s harder to name, because there’s no obvious moment to blame. It’s usually the road behind the question this work actually starts from: I don’t feel unhappy enough to leave. But I don’t feel alive enough to stay.
Some of what created your success was consciously chosen. Some of it was inherited — from family, education, culture, an early manager, or whatever got rewarded first. Neither route is a mistake. The work is knowing which one you’re in, and choosing consciously from here. Self‑Authored Life™ doesn’t mean rejecting everything inherited — it often means keeping exactly what you already have, now on purpose. Self‑Authored Leadership™ is how that authorship shows up in the way you lead.
The Coaching Method
Five steps that make the invisible internal conflict visible — and restructure decisions from identity, not expectation.
01
Clarity
Understand what’s actually happening beneath the surface — not just the presenting problem.
02
Alignment
Reconnect to values, identity and direction. What genuinely matters, versus what you’ve been optimising for?
03
Unblocking
Surface the internal scripts, limiting beliefs and inherited rules running in the background, and examine them without judgment.
04
Design
Redesign how leadership is actually practised — a structure that reflects who you are now, not who got you here.
05
Activation
Translate insight into real-world action that survives Monday morning — decisions, habits and behaviour, not just intention.
The goal throughout: make the invisible internal conflict visible, and restructure decisions from identity — not expectation.
What Makes This Different
You may have heard “what got you here won’t get you there.” It’s a well‑known, useful idea — and it operates at the level of behaviour: which habits to drop.
This work starts one layer underneath it: which identity is generating that behaviour in the first place, and what it actually takes to change who’s driving, not just what they’re doing.
This isn’t skills training. It’s identity work, grounded in real leadership experience and practical behavioural change.
